“Making the Right Decision”

As children, parents, wives, husbands, friends, and grandparents, we are constantly bombarded with decisions. Who will we chose as friends, what school should my children attend, where will we go on vacation this year, should I take that drink, what will happen if I drink alcohol right after I take my prescription, and so on and so on.

As older adults, you still have to be concerned with making the right decisions. All too often choices regarding substance use and abuse are taken very lightly, despite their drastic consequences. The harm caused by alcohol and other drugs varies in severity. Medical, social, financial, and relational problems as well as dependency, morbidity, and mortality are all very serious, if not fatal, harms.

Prescription drugs and alcohol DO NOT MIX. Alcohol may adversely react with prescriptions like tranquilizers, sleeping pills, high blood pressure pills, pain medication, and over the counter medications like cold and allergy pills. Symptoms include, but are not limited to, dizziness, fainting, confusion, drowsiness, and poor coordination. Choosing to skip a dose of medication in favour of taking a drink, or choosing to discontinue taking a particular medication without your doctor’s approval, are not safe or healthy decisions. Consider the mix; check with your doctor or pharmacist to find out the effects of various medications that you may currently be taking and how they react with each other. Also, consider not taking any alcoholic beverages while on any medication. Make safe and healthy decisions a part of your life. Your life may someday depend on them.
